Poor old John Fox – he really is a sour loser. (ET Letters, May 8). He really should have paused before putting pen to paper.
What sanctimonious humbug to lecture the voters of Peterborough that they voted the way they did "for all the wrong reasons".

How's that for cheek? Does he think that he is the only councillor who works diligently on behalf of their constituents, week in and week out?

Are all the other 53 non-Independent city councillors not up to snuff then John?

If so, I am sorry to say that he is even more out of touch with the governance of our city than I had imagined.

Finally, I agree with much of his comments on his two distinguished former Independent councillor colleagues.

It's just a shame that one of them didn't have the good grace and manners to stay for his own declaration and congratulate the winner.

Stewart Jackson
MP for Peterborough

Back at helm

I would like to thank the residents of East ward for again putting their trust in me by re-electing me to Peterborough City Council with a resounding 55 per cent of the vote.

I did my best to get around the ward, but, inevitably, the task of calling on nearly 4,500 homes and catching everyone in eluded me.

However, I hold two surgeries each month and am always available on the phone should anyone have issues; also, our bi-monthly printed newsletter and fortnightly e-mailed newsletter will continue to be produced to pass on news and views.

It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve East ward since 2002, and I intend to continue to seek to represent the residents, their interests and needs, as well as helping with the management of the city.

Cash buys time to care

I AM writing on behalf of Marie Curie Cancer Care to thank eveyone in Peterborough and Whittlesey for their generous support of the recent Marie Curie Cancer Care Great Daffodil Appeal, which is supported by Yellow Pages.

Your readers' support with our collections in the town and at local supermarkets has raised an amazing £3,948.30 for the local Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free high-quality nursing, to give local terminally-ill people the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

This fantastic amount will mean that local Marie Curie Nurses will be able to provide 197.42 more nursing hours.

If you would like more information about Marie Curie Cancer Care, visit our website at www.mariecurie.org.uk or call 01223 416405.

What was in her mind?

RE: Residents' horror as woman sets herself on fire, (ET Thursday, May 8)

RIP. Something must have been so desperately wrong in her life to choose such a horrific, painful exit. An ex-workmate of mine did the same thing over here in Westwood a few years ago. We were clueless to what he was going through beforehand.

Well what a surprise our inept totally out of touch clueless so called mp is at his bully boy tacticts yet again. Get a life and start doing the job you were elected to do. Like your predecessor did week in week out by voting and working in Westminster on what the residents want not party lines.

It would be nice to hear what councillors and MPs are planning to do to improve things rather than these childish arguments. However, Stewart Jackson has a point; independent councillors shouldn't assume everyone who voted against them voted along party lines. We voted against John Fox as we are unhappy with issues that still haven't been addressed in Werrington.
