I WRITE regarding concerns that the director and assistant directors of children's services at Peterborough City Council recently discussed a £300,000 reduction in the budget of the children's play service.
This represents a 50 per cent cut and it is worrying that those managing children's services in Peterborough would consider such a drastic move.

The budget has been reduced in real terms over the last eight years and we have already seen the closure of play centres such as Hobson's, in Central ward, where there are many children.

Is the service facing a financial crisis following the mismanagement of public finance initiative school projects?

Last month, I asked the Conservative council leader Cllr John Peach if he can assure us that the financial position is not critical and, if any cuts are required, that children's play does not suffer.

The result of the possible cuts would no doubt mean the closure of more children's centres, which are the jewels in the crown of the current service.

PLEASE READ THE LINK BELOW

above link to letters page, in particualr Mr Peach is quoted as saying:-
"to celebrate many million pounds of extra funding going into road and pavement repairs, extra street cleansing, adult services and education – all things residents have asked the council to prioritise"
NOW, ALMOST 18 MONTHS LATER I SEE ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO CELEBRATE! AND MORE IMPORTANTLY MR PEACH, NO EVIDENCE EITHER!
