In response to the letter of Mr Bernard Howard, haulier (ET, May 2).
I would ask Mr Howard why I as a member of the public would wish to provide my support to him as a director of a private company in his bid for higher profit in an already subsidised industry?
Perhaps he could explain how he intends to compensate the public for the congestion, destruction and environmental damage caused by lorries.
Daily, radio reports report on national delays and congestion caused by lorries which have overturned, shed
loads, broken down, caught fire, jacknifed or killed and injured other road users.
In the most recent police action against rogue and dangerous lorry drivers the police impounded a large percentage of vehicles with major defects.
The annual bill for this everyday toll of waste and destruction runs to millions of pounds.
Mr Howard will be aware that with deregulation, haulage has become an overcrowded industry. Perhaps Mr Howard may be aware of the global fluctuation in crude oil price, which is subject to global need, such as the demand from China and India. I take for granted that Mr Howard is aware that oil is a finite resource – as is the future of our planet in an era of climate change.
With oil as a precious resource, I would expect measures by drivers supporting conservation, such as a universal adoption of a smooth driving style and adherence to speed limits by road users. The evidence, including the escalating weight and size of vehicles, and the high road death toll in Cambridgeshire suggests otherwise.
The invocation of a flag draped coffin in the haulage protest is a truly squalid manoeuvre, and an insult to the memory of courageous military personnel who have given their lives in the service of their country.
To enlist the flag in this manner in support of increasing the profits of a private, subsidised industry is a shameful act.

near PeterboroughTown hall reception was a shamblesLiving In Italy, I have been coming home for as many Posh games as possible, thanks to Ryanair.
I came home this week to see the last game of the season, and would like to say that it was great lap of honour.
The bus tour around town was also well organised . . . but the town hall reception . . . well what a shambles.
Why did they just stand on the steps so a handful of fans could see? Why not on the balcony like previous times, so all the crowd could see? I would like to thank the council for putting on the shambles for all the loyal fans that turned out.

Via e-mailGrateful to be re-electedTo the people of Werrington.
What can I say to you in words that will express the sincere and deep gratitude I have for all of you who put your trust in me on election day?
Words alone cannot really explain how much love and respect I have for all of you individually, you are just amazing.
Even during a time of such a political swing in this country, you had the brain power to see through the entire misleading political clap-trap and differentiate between local and national politics and you voted accordingly.
That not only makes me so very proud to be re-elected, it makes me realise that I am in a very honoured and privileged position, only because you chose to put me there.

PeterboroughPoll result is very humblingFollowing my election as ward councillor on Thursday, I would like to thank all the people of South Werrington and North Gunthorpe who came out and voted for me. It has made me feel so humble.
I have dedicated my victory to my late wife Linda, who passed away on April 1, after a short, but very brave, fight against pancreatic cancer. It causes me such deep sadness that she did not survive to share this moment with me.
I would also like to thank in no particular order, my team of party workers, friends and family who have played such an important part in my success, the police who provided security on the day, all the staff at the polling stations and those at the count in the town hall and the other candidates who fought a clean and fair campaign.
