Boards let youngsters express themselves

RE: Is writing on the wall for new graffiti boards? (ET, May 7).
May I thank the council for its early stage of understanding with the work of street artists.

The boards erected this week are a good start. The artists understand this is just a beginning and although small and not well placed they are allowing young artists to express their skills without causing damage or endangering themselves.

Many people have already commented on how talented these youngsters are and one quite mature lady sat for some time watching and talking to these youngsters on Tuesday evening, it was a pleasure to watch the generations mixing. Unfortunately there seems to be a group of people who, yet again, need to complain. These youngsters are in a safe environment, showing their talent and generally trying to have a nice time. Surely a small amount of tax payers money is far better spent on safe approved areas for these youngsters than the thousands spent cleaning underground artwork from underpasses and buildings that, unfortunately, occur from trying to suppress them and expect them to be 'not seen or heard'.

It seems so sad that a certain minority of a slightly older generation seem to expect younger people to stay at home, or at least not appear around their area. These youngsters are not knife-wielding, drug taking muggers, but just youngsters expressing and entertaining themselves with no harm to others. Just give them a chance.

Many thanks to Nathan Murdoch and certain members of the council for their help and understanding in allowing these youngsters to be youngsters.

Dobbs in a Stew over constituency

With reference to the recent letter in The ET ('New councillor vows to work hard', May 7)

Cllr Dobbs, I would like to congratulate you on being elected as an Eye and Thorney councillor.

But in your recent CV in The ET you claim you previously worked as a driver for Peterborough City Council and you were interested in becoming a councillor through meeting people through your work at the town hall.

I understand from the letters page that you think that the current MP who represents Eye and Thorney is Stewart Jackson MP. Well, let's hope the people of Eye and Thorney did not elect you for your many years of observation within council chambers because, to the best of my knowledge, he is not your MP.

Perhaps a sat-nav system might come in handy so that you might best find your way to the town hall, instead of council employees having travelled some seven times round the globe with your new appointment we might be able to cut that to six should you attend the right town hall.

Well done everyone in Eye And Thorney.

Robert Harris
Bourges Boulevard,
Peterborough
