Letter: Memorial Hospital must not be destroyed - 01/12/08

PETERBOROUGH Memorial Hospital (now the Memorial Wing at Peterborough District Hospital), as its name implies, was built to remember those who died during the 1914 to 1918 war.
The money for the hospital was collected from a very wide area. It could not have been easy for workers on such low incomes to contribute. There must surely still be some local pensioners who grew up without a father, because he was killed in the dreadful conflict.
So much concern has been shown in recent weeks about the appalling conditions and suffering of so many in the trenches – will that concern soon die away?
To destroy such a memorial is a desecration and it must not happen.
The entrance facing Midland Road must be preserved as a social centre for people of all nationalities to meet together and become friends, instead of living in isolation and bitterness.
West Town is a true multi-cultural area, but lacks facilities, particularly for the elderly. They are people who can tell our youngsters what wartime existence was about.
Peterborough District Hospital is a later addition to the site, it is not a war memorial, so its demolition should not cause offence.
