AFTER all the effort and a great result, it seems a terrible shame that the Race For Life organisers are having to appeal to get sponsorship money in.
After the two events in June, Cancer Research UK was buoyed by the expectation of £300,000 from people who had backed participants. Unfortunately they are still £130,000 short.

It is obviously a letdown, particularly as every penny really does co
unt when it comes to funding highly sophisticated and expensive research into cancer. Hopefully, this is just a glitch, because some participants have simply not found the time to collect all the cash from their sponsors as yet.

But, nationally, last year one in three women – many of whom ran in memory of friends and relatives who had died of cancer – failed to live up to pledges. That's hard to understand, because surely it is seeing a boost for this great cause, not to mention recognition of their own efforts, that's an incentive to collect sponsorship.

We would urge everyone who hasn't done so yet to get collecting and get the money in.

Blink and you'll miss the summer

THERE we were thinking it had been a dreadful summer, when in fact we were doing not-too- badly in the Peterborough area.

Well, better than most that is, as Wittering has had more sunshine than anywhere else in England this month at 107 hours.

That's not something to celebrate however, as 190 sunny hours is the norm for this time of year.

It's a case of blink and you miss it.

Perhaps the organisers are being a bit impatient. I used to do the Great Eastern Run for a different charity every year until I received a letter from one charity, strongly worded, saying they hadn't received the sponsor money, less than aweek after the event. I hadn't had time to collect it all in at that time but knowing how much was due I wrote a cheque from my account and forwarded it to them and collected the money in in my own time. I also returned their T shirt which they had sent me and I never ran for charity again.
