WE are sure that all our readers will join us in sending 11-year-old Siobhan Southwell best wishes following the kidney transplant operation that will hopefully transform her life.
It's early days yet, and understandably her mum and dad are hoping and praying that all will work out well, but the indications are good. We can only imagine the emotional turmoil they went through when they got an early morning call from Great Ormon
d Street Hospital on Saturday to say a donor had been found. Joy was undoubtedly mixed with fear, uncertainty, and sorrow that someone had died to give Siobhan the chance of living her life without spending three days a week going through gruelling dialysis.
Siobhan will now face two weeks of tests to ensure her body isn't rejecting the new kidney, and then she can experience a life of freeom from constant hospital care for the first time. Taking anti-rejection drugs for the rest of her life will be a small price to pay.
Siobhan's story is a reminder of the importance of carrying a donor card. There are currently 116 other children in the UK hoping suitable organs can be found.
