THE years were swept away when survivors of the desperate battle for survival at Dunkirk met yesterday to share memories.
They remembered comrades who fell, and those who have passed away, because their numbers are dwindling every year. While these brave men may have fought the German army to the very last bullet, they have not been able to fight the passing of time.
But what a great idea from 92-year-old Harry Lee to pay for a lunch for the remaining veterans.
As he said philosophically: "I thought I might as well do something with my cash." And we're sure it was money well spent to roll back the years to 1940 when young Harry, who served with the Royal Corps of Signals, "borrowed" a ladies bike and, with a mate hanging on, rode to the beach in the hope of being liberated by the flotilla of little boats that had sailed across the English Channel to the rescue. Harry was one of the lucky ones, he escaped. However, his luck ran out when he was captured later while fighting Rommel's forces in the North African desert.
We hope these gallant old soldiers will all see many more reunions.
