WHETHER their fears are unfounded or not, you have to applaud the people of Guyhirn near Wisbech for standing up for themselves.
At a time when there appears to be little community spirit in evidence, more than 100 villagers packed a public meeting to discuss plans for an adult shop.

Licensing chiefs might be left with little alternative other than to grant a permit for th
e shop – which would breathe new life into a redundant restaurant.

But at least villagers will have given them something to think about.

Footballer is a great role model

FOOTBALLERS are often criticised for setting the wrong example, so credit where it is due.

Luke Steele, whose FA Cup heroics in goal for Barnsley won him a new army of fans, returned to his former school with a special thankyou.

His performance against Liverpool won him the FA Cup player of the round award – entitling him to a VIP trip to Wembley for today's final, and £500 worth of sports equipment. So it was only right that the youngsters at Arthur Mellows Village College, in Glinton, were the beneficiaries.

The school is fortunate to have such a smashing role model.

Reduce the threat of injury at work

The cost of accidents in the workplace could not be made much clearer than in the case which landed city company Peter Brotherhood before a city court. Roger Boon, a skilled machinist got caught up in a lathe and lost an arm. For the company, which admitted health and safety breaches, it meant more than £20,000 in fines and costs. It is to be hoped lessons are learned – in all workplaces – and the threat to life and limb is reduced.

Well done Luke Steele, maybe he can give lessons to some of the overpaid players in the Premier League.
