THESE are dark days for people who stretched themselves to the limit to afford houses on high mortages.
When the good times were rolling, tempting offers of huge loans did not look too risky. Now, unfortunately, the unwary are facing the hard reality of repaying crippling debts at a time when the cost of everyday living is soaring with food and fuel pr
ices escalating all the time.
Sadly, this has led to some worrying statistics showing that the number of repossessions is rising. And behind every statistic is a story of disaster for families faced with losing the roof over their heads. Many tenants in rented properties are in a similar situation, as landlords, who are having to tighten their own belts, are cracking down on those in arrears.
The Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) has criticised irresponsible lenders for much of the crisis, and point to a case where someone came to them in dire straits because his £1,350 monthly salary has to cover a £950 mortgage payment. This was clearly a case of the lender and the borrower both failing to recognise the risks.
It's clear that those with problems should seek advice as soon as possible.
