SOMETIMES you have to wonder what kind of madness drives people to not only be destructive, but to callously put the lives of others at risk.
We can only sympathise with the decent people of Paston who suffered at the hands of hooligans who went on a rampage at the weekend.

It was bad enough that some people found to their dismay that their car windscreens had been smashed, but members of one family are lucky to be alive after some idiots set their car on fire and then pushed it into their house.

Whoever did this apparently didn't consider that someone could die as a result of their actions – or they simply didn't care that they might be committing murder.

The people responsible for the other incident in which eight cars were damaged obviously didn't care either about the distress, cost and inconvenience to the owners – including an elderly disabled couple who needed their car to keep hospital appointments, and had to pay for taxi fares.

Sadly, it seems that the thugs who roam our streets simply haven't learned anything from expressions of public anger over tragedies brought about by random acts of violence and vandalism.

Great idea to remember legends

It's a great idea by Councillor John Fox to name new streets after colourful characters who enlivened life in the city. Legendary boatman Ted Hammond, and big-hearted stuntman Walter Cornelius, should surely qualify. Full story: Call to name street after famous Peterborough residents
