ET Comment: It's something to Scout about 16/05/2008

IT'S like a breath of fresh air to hear that more youngsters are joining the Scouting movement. Not for them lolling around on street corners moaning that they have nothing to do.
Far from being bored and seeking a release through anti-social behaviour and hooliganism, they are throwing themselves into a range of adventure activities, from camping to canoeing, and pitting themselves against many challenges, including learning the skills of leadership.
For a time, numbers of Scouts were down. There was a feeling among youngsters that being seen in uniform and taking part in healthy activities was very uncool and old fashioned. Now there are signs of a real revival and younger leaders are bringing enthusiasm and new ideas to make being a Scout an even more exciting and rewarding experience.
Scouts believe in responsibility, in forging friendships, and in taking personal responsibility. All factors missing in the world of the teenage tearaways who blame everyone else for their rootless misery and lack of ambition, and spend much of their time being a blight on society.
The more youngsters who adopt the principles and ideals of Scouting the better. At least they will be getting a headstart in becoming responsible citizens.
