THE build-up – which seemed to begin as soon as the last one ended – is over, and Peterborough Festival returned with a bang on Saturday.
And although Flaming June is still yet to make an appearance, the smiles on the faces of hundreds who took part in the Mayor's Parade – and the thousands lining the city centre streets – suggest everyone was having the time of their lives.

s by Acker Bilk and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra were also well supported making it a fantastic opening weekend.
And with events planned every day right through to Saturday, it was hopefully just the beginning of a record breaking festival for the city.

People power in action on homesTHOUSANDS of homes are needed in and around the city over the next decade, and to some extent the city council's hands are tied.
But that is not to say people of the city cannot have a democratic say in the impact development has on their homes.
The people of Newborough - fighting a new housing scheme in their village for more than a year - are a good example of that.
Planners would be wise to listen to public opinion.
