Most residents in Peterborough have been happy enough with the below- inflation council tax increase imposed by the Tory-run local administration.
And councillors have been happy enough to pat themselves on the back for their skilful financial management and efficiency as the city boasted one of the lowest increases in the country.

It was achieved seemingly without having to cut services – a win-win situation.

But now it seems some cracks are starting to appear and residents are reacting angrily to plans to increase charges in such emotive areas as parking and day care services.

Few residents want to pay more tax, but books have to be balanced and services paid for.

The money will come from a combination of council tax and fees paid by those who use the services.

What that balance should be is decided by our local politicians. Their decisions will ultimately be endorsed or rejected by voters through the ballot box.


Fight against HIV is far from won

THE revelation that there are more people than ever before in Peterborough who are HIV positive or who are suffering from Aids is a stark reminder that the battle with this terrible illness is nowhere near won.

Education and raising awareness remain the two key weapons available to reduce the illness's terrible toll.
