VILE arsonists have again put the lives of Peterborough families at risk, and it's lucky their actions have not resulted in fatalities.
The fire at Chadburn, in Paston, also shows that fly-tippers are providing the material arsonists need to go about their crazy antics.
It was rubbish, and an old sofa, that had been dumped behind a parade of shops which was set alight. If some pe
ople hadn't been so slovenly, this disgusting material wouldn't have been there in the first place. But it turned out to be highly flammable, and families in two flats were almost trapped as the flames leapt as high as a first floor balcony.
While firefighters led a mother, father and two children through the smoke to safety from one flat, it was 14-year-old Domante Butkute who displayed bravery and a cool head when her family home was also threatened on Sunday night. The quick-thinking youngster led her two young brothers out – despite the handle of a stairwell door being so hot it burned her hand – and then went back for her mum and baby sister to make sure they got out unharmed.
Domante is a credit to her family. On the other hand, the arsonists and the fly-tippers are a menace and a risk to everyone in the city.
