ARSON is one of the most callously stupid crimes that plagues Peterborough. So it's good to hear that more perpetrators are being caught.
Much of this is down to the work of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service's Arson Task Force which works closely with police investigators in using the latest forensic methods to gather evidence.

Arsonists seem oblivious to the dangers they creat
e. Fire spreads rapidly and ferociously and a blaze started in one property can quickly devastate others nearby.

As Mick Fowler of the fire service arson team points out: "Arson is a serious crime which can have potentially fatal consequences."

Some families who have had to flee their burning homes at dead of night would certainly tesify to that.

Mick also makes the point, however, that much can be done to help reduce the risk of arson by the community, and several recent incidents could probably have been avoided if some people had been more careful, or public spirited. For instance, flytippers often provide the material for arsonists to use, and there's no excuse for this.

The arsonists themselves seem not to care that they could be responsible for the horrific deaths of people trapped in burning homes. It may take stiff sentences for those who are caught to bring others to their senses.
