ONE of the most exciting games seen in local women's football took place at the weekend when Peterborough Azure came from behind twice to beat Daventry Town Ladies 4-3 after extra time in the East Midlands League Cup.
Against the run of play Daventry took the lead but Azure equalised with a goal from Jade Ovendale.
A defensive mistake allowed Daventry to take a 2-1 lead and five minutes before half-time Azure were dealt a blow when losing defender Samara Iredal
e with concussion.
Ovendale equalised again early in the second period and from then on it was mostly Azure pressure with tiny Toni Lewis causing the Daventry defence problems with her pace.
However, it was fellow forward Jess Evans who converted an Ovendale cross to take Azure into a 3-2 lead.
But depite the constant pressure Azure were unable to add to their tally and were punished in the 93rd minute when Daventry launched a rare attack and scored with a breakaway goal to take the game into extra-time.
The first half of extra-time finished goalless with Azure again on the offensive for most of the 15 minutes.
With penalties looming Azure's Lewis was fouled just outside the box and skipper and free- kick specialist Sarah Hudson put the ball over the wall and keeper and just under the crossbar to score a deserved winner.
THREE stunning goals from long range earned Peterborough Diamonds a 3-0 win on a bog of a pitch at Holbeach.
Emma Stebbing broke the deadlock on 35 minutes after picking up a ball just inside the opposition half from where she launched it over the home keeper and into the net.
Diamonds' second strike, with 65 minutes gone, wasn't bad either as Dani Croucher fired home from 35 yards, and then with five minutes to go she did even better, smashing home areal humdinger from 50 yards.
Elsewhere for Diamonds, Sam Garwell was impressive at the back and new signing Beth Lelliott put in a solid performance in a midfield role.
