"A CRACKING game" is how Peterborough Ladies manager Maria Rudd described her side's 4-4 draw with Haringey Borough.
A brace from Clare Knibbs, a solo effort from Vicky King and a goal-of-the-season contender from Donna Nicholls secured a share of the spoils for the city side who saw their lead cut back twice by their London-based opponents.
Peterborough took th
e lead after 20 minutes when Lisa White was upended and from the resulting free-kick taken by Knibbs, the Haringey keeper punched the ball away into the path of King who placed the ball safely in the back of the net.
Almost immediately, Haringey equalised when the ball was squeezed past keeper Claire Ireson from a tight angle and then took the lead when a long ball caught the Peterborough defence napping and was fired high into the net.
In the second half, the Peterborough midfield started to dominate the game and they equalised through a well taken goal by Knibbs, who battled past two defenders before lifting the ball over the Haringey keeper.
It was Knibbs' second that allowed Peterborough to take a 3-2 lead when she skipped past a couple of defenders but this was short-lived as Haringey drew level with another long ball over the top.
With 12 minutes remaining, Peterborough took the lead with a cracker. A pass from Knibbs found White who set up Nicholls to half-volley the ball into the roof of the Haringey net.
It would have been a worthy winner but Haringey equalised with minutes left on the clock with a shot from the edge of the box.
Rudd said: "It was a cracking game to play in and to watch. The ball went from end to end and although we had many more chances in front of goal, a draw was a fair result at the end of the day.
"The point has lifted us to third in the table, and with our county cup semi-final looming it would be great to get something out of this season as the girls have deserved it."
Peterborough travel to Haverhill in the league on Sunday.
The Eastern Regional Women's League has appointed Rudd as the league's representative manager.
She will take charge of the side for the first time on May 4 when they play the South East Combination League at Cambridge City FC (2pm kick-off). The game will be in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
