I would like to share a secret with you. Well part of one. There is a place, not far from where we all live, that is just incredible. It is green and idyllic, like something from the pages of a Thomas Hardy novel.
The phrase An English Country Garden springs to mind when you walk in, and it's a place that will keep your kids happy and amused for hours. There are willow trees perfect for climbing, and a fine wrought iron bridge. There are burning coal smells that remind you of the old days and then there are the train.

I'm not talking about the three-mile-long National Express monster that flashes down to King's Cross in 50 minutes. Or the authentic Nene Valley Railway that merrily chugs along between Yarwell and Wansford. Nope. Both of these are clearly well known and busy already, and hold no secrecy to locals.

The train place I have discovered has trains that are all small, but still powerful enough to pull wonderful open-air five people carriages. And the beauty of this place is that hardly anyone knows of its existence!

Let me tease you some more. It is run by a band of men (volunteers) who are all miniature train enthusiasts. They all have no fashion sense, they all have greying hair, and they all wear peaked caps. They are all deeply obsessed by model trains and meet frequently to enjoy their passion. Be it building them, servicing them, cleaning them, talking about them, or driving them, they are the happiest souls alive when busy with their choo-choos.

And in this beautiful giant back garden, they have built themselves a train track that stretches more than 11,000 feet and includes a cute little tunnel. Then, on certain days and at certain times, they open up shop to sell tickets for rides for just 50p each. Kids under four can ride for free. There is also a café, where prices are stuck in the old days. Cup of tea: 40p. Lolly: 5p. You get the idea.

I actually held my daughter's fourth birthday party at this place recently, and aside from paying for some rides, I wasn't charged a bean. The party was so successful, that at the end nobody wanted to go home. Even some of the mums and dads kicked and screamed saying they didn't want to go home yet. The wife was like the cat that got the cream, so happy was she that the party had been a hit. "Best birthday party I've ever been to," said one mum. Carlsberg don't do parties for little girls, but if they did, they would probably be exactly like this one.

So where is this place? What's the website? Well, I believe it is one of Peterborough's best kept secrets, and because I like it so much as it is, and I don't want it spoiled by too many people, I'm not going to tell you where it is.

Sorry.

If you wanted to keep this a secret Kev perhaps the best thing to have done is to not have mentioned it all. By tantalising us you have managed to frustrate many a parent who now know that there is little piece of paradise out there that we and our family cannot enjoy. I'd rather not have known to be honest.
