NETHERTON KESTRELS 4 SPALDING 0

Under 14 Division Four
HAVING taking over from dad Derek Nimmo in the Netherton hot-seat to secure the club's first win of the season, son Stuart could be forgiven for getting a little too comfortable in the post.

With the old man up in Scotland for the weekend, it was Nimmo Junior who stepped in to lead the Kestrels to success against fellow strugglers Spalding in this basement battle.

Having managed the side last season, Stuart knew the players and the system and wasted no time in engineering a performance which fully merited the three points to send the Kestrels soaring past their rivals and off the bottom of the table.

Goals for Claudio Marques, Stuart Williamson, Ryan Guest and Kuhle Tshabalaa at The Grange got the job done, but their caretaker boss has no plans to start a power struggle with his dad.

He said: "Dad was up in Scotland doing a spot of painting so I had to take over for the game and of course I am delighted that we have won such a big match.

"It was really important for us to get three points on the board as soon as possible having lost our first three games and this will give the boys a lot of confidence.

"But I cannot take all the credit as we started the season short of players and that has played a part in our poor start. Now we have a few more lads on the books and the squad looks a lot stronger which made a big difference against Spalding.

"Hopefully the team can now start to show their true potential and push on up the league. I really think they can challenge for the title this season but it will be my dad back in charge for that – he is the manager and I am sure he will do an excellent job of getting the lads going.

"It was nice to be back for one game but that is it for me now."

For Spalding a change of boss is unlikely to have such a dramatic effect – what they need is a serious shake-up.

With little competition for places, boss Dean Wilson has complained that some of his players have stopped trying in matches knowing their name will still be on the teamsheet next week come what may.

Wilson said: "It is very frustrating as I have some good players here at the club but many of them have stopped putting in that little bit extra we need to win games.

"They know they will be in regardless of their performances as we don't have the players and it has had a bad effect. We have a few coming back in like Luke Wilson who will make a difference but the whole attitude of the squad needs to improve.

"In training they really go for it but it seems against other teams they go into their shells and don't play the way I know they can. But we will keep working on it and hopefully be able to turn this poor start around."
