IT'S now two down and one to go for Yaxley after Glyn Brothwell's young Cuckoos landed the Hunts Cup last night.
Less than four days after securing the Division One title with their 13th straight league win of the season, Brothwell's battlers were
at it again with a 3-1 win against St Ives - the team they beat in last year's final.
Two goals for Kieran Turner and one for Connor Nicholls in near gale conditions at Jubilee Park in Huntingdon saw Yaxley breeze to yet another trophy.
Now Rippingale lie in wait for the city side in the final of the League Cup this Sunday and if they win that one Yaxley will have snatched a stunning seven-day treble.
Brothwell said: "It's a fantastic achievement for the lads and for the club but we haven't finished yet.
"We have been focused on certain objectives all season and the last one of those is the League Cup at the weekend.
"Rippingale stand in the way of us in that one and we all know what a quality side they are so we will have to be at our best if we want to land the treble but I know the lads can do it."
After going down to an early goal in Huntingdon last night Yaxley had to dig deep and dig deep they did when Nicholls fired his side back on terms before Kieran Turner's double for the league champions put the game beyond doubt.
"St Ives must be sick of the sight of us as we beat them last year too, but just like then we were given one hell of a game and we had to be right on it in a tight game," said Brothwell.
"It's been a great season for us so far and beating Rippingale would just be the perfect way to round things off. But even if we fall short I am proud of the lads and what they have achieved already."
Yaxley clinched the Division One title with a 4-1 win against Bushfield thanks to goals by Curtis Adams, Andy Franklin, Lewis Glover and Connor
THE numbers finally added up to title success for Deaconians after a win against Deeping secured the Division Two crown.
For the past two weeks Simon Pearson's side have looked untouchable at the top of the table, but with Wittering still technically capable of matching their points total, another three points were needed to be mathematically sure.
So a win against Deeping, courtesy of two goals from Tyler Downer and one for Helder Pinto meant it was party time at last for Pearson's lads who are now looking forward to mixing it with the big boys next season.
"We were almost sure of the title a couple of weeks ago but we needed another win to completely discount Wittering from the equation so we were all over the moon at the weekend when we finally did it.
"We also wanted to protect our unbeaten home record so there were a few nerves to start with because there was a lot riding on the match.
"But we coped well against a solid Deeping side and can't wait to see how we get on in the First Division.
"The team has done really well this season and I would like to give a special mention to our keeper Chris Watkins and Tyler Downer who have both come in this season and done a great job for the team.
"The club is really going from strenght to strength and I would like to thank everyone who has helped out this season, particularly my coach Brian O'Sullivan."
