SAWTRY Colts picked up their first win of the season as the floodgates finally opened against Crowland in this Blue Zone basement battle.

Having not found the net for their past three games, Sawtry were desperate to re-discover the scoring touch a
gainst a side which had started the match above them in the Red Zone table.

And five goals, including a hat-trick for Rhys Jones and strikes for Adam Smith and Dom Clewlow, saw Steve Furzeland's side do just that to take their first win and put their recent travails behind them.

With Toby Furzeland in excellent form down the wing in front of a defence well marshalled by Jack Williams and Austin O'Neill, Sawtry proved they are a better team than their current league position suggests.

Furzeland said: "Crowland are a decent side and actually started the game above us in the table so it was important we put in a good performance.

"And I am pleased to say that we did just that with the lads realising they will get more joy actually passing the ball rather than running it into trouble.

"Up until this weekend scoring goals has been our big trouble but I am pleased to say that we seem to have put that behind us.

"Scoring goals is vital at any level of football and I hope we will build on this result.

"We finished fifth last year and had a good cup run and I hope the boys can repeat that feat if they keep putting in performances like that."

MALBORNE Lions roared out a warning to the rest of the White Zone with another impressive win on Saturday.

Having lost their opening game to Riverside Red, the defending champions have been on a roll over the past month chalking up three straight wins including this 9-0 defeat of Deeping Rangers.

Goals for Ben Schneider (2), Johny Crier (2), Jack Turner (2), Prentice Speechley, Alex Slater and William Coulson flew in as the Lions continue to repair the damage done by that opening day defeat.

Manager Phil Stewart said: "We didn't start too well last season and it was the same this time round but since our loss to Riverside they have shown how to come back from defeat.

"Saturday was not all about scoring goals, it was about the way we passed the ball and took our chances which was very impressive.

"I am not going to make any predictions about whether we can defend our title as there are some good teams in this league who will want to stop us.

"All I can say is that we will be giving it everything in every game and just see where that takes us."
