WERRINGTON ATHLETIC 2 SAWTRY YELLOW 1 (Under 11 Division Two)
THEIR season may only be eight games old but it's already been a long, hard slog for Werrington and Sawtry.

The Yellows have yet to pick up a point while Werrington have also been struggling at the wrong end of the table.

So Sunday's game was always going to be massive with both sides targeting the bottom-of-the-table clash as the perfect chance to change their luck.

And perhaps unsurprisingly it was Werrington who took the chance to clamber free from the Division Two basement after a 2-1 win.

Not that Damien Hunter's side didn't have to work hard for the three points which put them a point clear of Parkside and consigned Sawtry to their seventh league defeat on the bounce.

A host of missed chances meant the city boys struggled to put any daylight between themselves and their visitors, a trait which has cost them more than the odd point already this season.

Goals for Brandon Huskisson and Albert Johnson represented a poor return for Werrington, who according to their boss, have not done themselves any favours in front of goal in what has so far been a largely disappointing campaign.

Hunter said: "The first thing I would like to say is that I cannot understand why Sawtry are struggling this season as they put in an excellent performance against us.

"They have a decent side and I am sure once they get a break they will be able to turn their season round.

"But there is no doubt we looked at this game as our chance to turn round our own season.

"And we managed that but we could have made it a lot easier for ourselves. We missed a lot of chances and as I have said before that has cost us this season.

"We have some excellent players but we do need to start getting a bit more clinical up front if we want to show our true potential this season."

After finding themselves under the cosh for long spells in the first half Sawtry posed a far greater threat after the break.

And when Lee Huntingdon fired home only his side's fourth of the season with the last kick of the game it was the least they deserved for a plucky display.

Sawtry manager Steve Huntingdon said: "It has been hard for us this season so it was good for us to be involved in a game which was a little closer than some have been.

"A lot of my boys are new to the game so it has been hard for us but they are learning all the time.

"I am encouraging them to watch more on TV so they get a better feel for how the 11-a-side game works as they have struggled to adapt.

"But we were much better against Werrington and hopefully we can build confidence from that performance after our win against Heming ford Under 12s in the Hunts Cup."
