APPEARANCES are obviously important to King's Cliffe who produced one of the shocks of the weekend by dumping Sawtry Yellow out of the League Cup.
Sporting brand new kit provided by the Football Foundation, goals from Jamie Andrew, Billy Frohmaier
, Marley Kelley and Harry Lown saw Perry Miller's Division Three team record an excellent 4-1 victory against opposition from the division above.
And while Sawtry have yet to win a game this season, few would have expected them to succumb in such emphatic fashion to the Red Kites who themselves struggled in the basement last term.
A Haydn Baker strike was the best Sawtry could manage, however, to leave King's Cliffe boss Miller hopeful of a far more productive campaign this time round.
He said: "It was a double celebration for us as this was not only our first ever win in a League Cup match but we were also wearing our new kit thanks to a £400 donation from the Football Foundation.
"We played really well and demolished Sawtry with an excellent all-round team performance and after taking a 2-0 lead into half-time they never really troubled us.
"Everyone is delighted because we finished bottom last season so this cup win will do our confidence the world of good. We have already started a bit better in the league and are mid-table and we hope to be able to put a decent cup run together too.
"Of course the most important thing is that the boys are enjoying their football and long may that continue."
ANTOHER team desperate to record their first League Cup win were Sawtry Blue.
But a 3-0 defeat away to PSV, who scored through Nicholas Aldred (2) and Ryan Johnson, meant that dream must be put on hold for another season.
So with their cup dream over, boss Rob McGregor intends to make a decent fist of their Division One campaign.
He said: "We were looking to get past the first round for the first time but sadly it wasn't third time lucky for us. We battled well but they got their goals at the right time and when they hit number three late on it really finished us off.
"Sadly we seem destined never to win a League Cup match so we must now focus all our attention on the league. But good luck to PSV for the reast of the competition – they played really well."
THE biggest win of the first round went to Stamford Youth who smashed 12 goals past Whittlesey Red.
The top-flight Daniels versus a side currently bottom of Division Three was always going to be a one-sided affair with Henry Franks helping himself to a double hat-trick.
Also on the scoresheet for Stamford were Freddie Moore (2), Jack Corby, William Woodward and Jake Adams.
Thomas Ewins and Aaron Emery did restore some pride for Whittlesey, who in fact did manage to score three goals - sadly for them though, one of those efforts was into their own net.
