GUNTHORPE boss Andrew Roberts reckons a single goal cost his side the Division One championship this season.

And it's hard to disagree with him.

Had his entertaining young side managed a goal against Woodston in their 1-0 defeat against the eventual champions three weeks ago, it would have been Gunthorpe celebrating a famous title win.

As it is the 'Gunners' will have to settle for second place, a point behind, this time round after a 6-1 last- day win against Whittlesey thanks to goals for Sean Roberts (2), Connor Craig, Dan Gardinor, Jordan Fife and Josh Hales.

Roberts said: "We were all disappointed to miss out because we felt we deserved something from the season, but fair play to Woodston they are a cracking side and worthy champions but we will be after them next season that's for sure.

"Our defence has been rock solid with Sam Makepiece-Beech in particular doing really well but we do need to up our firepower a little this summer.

"I think the game against Woodston cost us because at the end of the day if we had got just one goal for the draw, we would be champions now. But that's just the way it is.

"The lads have been magnificent and I am sure they will continue their development next season."

MARCH Phoenix boss Bruce Abraham has certainly been feeling the pressure over the past three weeks.

Just three points away from the promised land of Division Two, Abraham thought his side had clinched promotion weeks ago when their match with Blackstones was abandoned with Phoenix winning.

But after being informed by the Junior Alliance that abandoned games must be replayed, the two teams were ordered to do it all over again.

And while they were pushed to the wire by a buzzing Blackstones side on Sunday, Abraham's aces finally got the points they needed to say goodbye to Division Three.

They won 4-3 through two penalties by William Mason and a goal apiece for Luca Abraham and Tom Whitby.

"It was a great game, very pleasing on the eye but not so good on the heart!" said the March boss.
