Those of you who are regular readers of my column will know all about my love hate relationship with exercise.
Actually, to be honest, there isn't much love, in fact I just hate it.

I think part of the reason I have never enjoyed sport is because I have never been particularly good at it, so couldn't be bothered to put the effort in to improve.

But in recent years – in part, due to the fact, I am married to a keep fit nut – I have begun to realise that in order to stay healthy and thin(ish) I need to get off my gluteus maximus and get active.

I have joined several gyms, but always found the monotonous pounding on a treadmill mindnumbingly boring, and hated breathing in the manufactured air circulating from the whirring air conditioning units above. Consequently I would go, do my routine as quickly as possible, and get the hell out of there – not really conducive to getting fit, I think you would agree.

But in April I saw a small news story in The ET about Run4Fun, a six-week running course designed for people who wanted to learn how to run safely and get around Race For Life in one piece.

After losing my uncle to cancer a few weeks later I decided to do Race For Life, but, me being me, also decided if I was going to take part, I wanted to do it properly and run the whole way.

Consequently, I paid my £20 and joined Run4Fun, and I cannot believe how much I enjoy it.

In just six weeks I, and the 16 other women who joined, have gone from running one minute, walking one minute, to running nearly three miles without stopping.

I don't want to jinx it, but I think I might have caught the fitness bug.

And I am determined to keep it up, even after I have completed Race For Life on Tuesday night.

Not only do I feel so much better in myself, I have lost inches off my waist, bust and hips – unfortunately nothing has come off the top of my legs, but they are definitely more toned.

I cannot say I find it easy to run three miles, but just the fact I have been able to do it, is enough encouragement for me to keep going, and I really hope to improve on the time it takes. I am even considering joining Werrington Joggers afterwards to help keep me motivated.

What is great too is my whole family is supporting me in my efforts, even my five-year-old son's Samuel has designated himself my personal trainer (his soul aim in life at the moment is to be fitter than Spider-Man).

So last night, just before I went on a three mile run, my husband and I did a little circuit around Deeping St James, copying Samuel's fitness moves – this basically involved Samuel being the leader instructing us on how to do star-jumps, skipping and cartwheels – heaven knows what the motorist thought driving passed us!
