PHANTOMS could well be providing the backbone of future England and Great Britain sides after several youngsters were today selected for national squads.
After a string of excellent performances while representing the South East at conference finals weekend in Hull, 10 players from the various junior teams based at Bretton have been handed England or GB call-ups.
Lewis Hook, Alex Whyte and Dominic Wheathall were chosen for England Under 14s, Dan Lane, Mitch White and Jonno Williamson for England Under 16s and Luke Ferrara, Grant Bignell, Ryan Bainborough and Tom Jeffery have all been selected to join the GB Under 18 squad.
And it was an extra special weekend for local star Ferrara and the Under 17s after he netted twice in the conference final for the South East against the Midlands to secure a last-gasp win for the underdogs.
Team manager Paul Bignell said: "It is great for the club to have so many youngsters represented as it is excellent for their development to play at that level.
"And there was a bit extra for me, Stevie Johnson and Steve Maile because we manage the Under 17s who actually won their age group.
"It was certainly a dramatic game as we were short-handed and trailing with just a few moments to go.
"But the boys never stopped trying and I think there were about two seconds left on the clock when we finally got the winner, so we were all delighted."
Last season Phantoms first teamers Jeffery and Callum Fowler were part of the Great Britain team which won a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Estonia.
If the pair are again selected for the finals they will face a far sterner test in the World Championships' Division One after their success in Estonia last year won the team promotion.
