Ice Hockey: Phantoms identify three top teenage prospects
Peterborough Phantoms will be drip feeding the first team with young blood next season.
In a move designed to ensure youngsters get their chance in the rough and tumble of English Premier League ice hockey, at least three top prospects have been identified to be given the chance to play with the big boys next season.
But to make it happen, with the new academy system not expected to bear fruit for at least another year, club director Jon Kynaston has revealed the club cast its net wide in a bid to get the best.
Kynaston said: "We are talking to three young players aged between 16 and 17 who are very keen to come and join our set-up.
"These three are widely regarded as some of the top young talents in the UK at the moment and, while only one is local, it will be a great boost to Phantoms if we can get them on board.
"They will develop within the academy set-up and be given chances to figure with the first team when the time is right.
"The hardest thing for any junior is breaking through to the senior game so giving them a little time on the bench and some limited ice time will be invaluable for their future development.
"This club is famous for developing young players and using this system we hope to continue that tradition for years to come."
Among the current Phantoms first-team squad James Ferrara, Euan King and Craig Peacock all came through the junior ranks along with James Archer who has since signed for fierce rivals Milton Keynes Lightning.
And if Kynaston's vision goes to plan, Phantoms' tradition of developing players capable of competing with the best should continue for years to come.
He said: "Once the academy gets up and running it would be nice to think that all our British players could have been developed at the club.
"It is such an advantage to have players who are familiar with the set-up as they are far more likely to make the step up successfully when the time comes.
"For us to reach that stage will take a few years but I am confident we are heading in the right direction and the future certainly looks bright."
Phantoms are planning a barbecue at The Bull in Newborough on June 21 to announce a number of player signings for the coming season.
