THERE were celebrations in the city and in the fens over the weekend as three local sides won promotion in East League hockey.
City of Peterborough seconds and Wisbech clinched their expected elevation from the men's Premier B Division and March Ladies have escaped from East Division Two North.
Wisbech sealed their promotion in style with an 8-1 hammering of Norwich City. Luke Smith (2), Bradley Apted, Sam Markillie, Joe Melton, Sam Blunt and Dan Martell all scored, but James Mansfield was denied a first goal of the season when his penalty flick was saved.
City had to work much harder at local rivals Bourne before their celebrations could begin. Bourne took a shock lead through Julian Catto, but Andrew Cave and Paul Hillsdon ensured there was no shock result – Hillsdon struck the winner from a short corner four minutes from time.
Wisbech and City are dead level with two games to go, but the former's vastly superior goal difference means two wins will see them lift the title.
March Ladies can also win a title. They beat Dereham seconds 2-1 with goals from Lauren Oakman and Robyn Gribble to secure their promotion and now face a potential title decider against Old Buckenham after Easter.
Market Deeping Ladies lost both their Cambs League Cup Finals. The first team went down 1-0 to St Ives seconds, while the seconds were beaten 6-0 by Cambridge South.
Deeping's men were also beaten for just the second time in East Division Three North West this season. Paul Tancred grabbed a hat-trick, but two goals in the final 10 minutes clinched a 6-4 win for Ely – Deeping are already promoted, but still require two points for the title.
March seconds virtually ensured their survival at this level with a 4-0 win over Cambs Nomads seconds. Andrew Wright, Ryan Wright, Tom Nickalls and John West scored the goals.
Sawtry Ladies said goodbye to long-serving Pauline Stamper. Stamper has retired after 30 years at the club, bowing out by playing in a 4-2 friendly defeat at the hands of Sandy – Natasha Darrington scored both the Sawtry goals.
City of Peterborough Veterans maintained an unbeaten record at Bretton Gate which stretches back over two years with a 2-1 win over Harleston. Wayne Humphries claimed both goals.
