Stanground Wash is the tip of Cambridgeshire's second major flood defence, the Nene Washes, and home to many rare insects and birds.
Along the southern margin of the reserve the Back River contains nationally-scarce plants such as fringed water-lily and grass-wrack pondweed. The site is a haven for birds, and visitors might be lucky enough to hear snipes, redshanks and sandpipers,
and catch a glimpse of a peregrine.

WHERE: From the A1 take the A1139 east towards Peterborough. Take fourth exit for Farcet and Stanground. Cross back over the A1139 and turn left at the first roundabout. Take the right turn in to South Street at the mini roundabout.

Turn right at the traffic lights into Coneygree Road, then the second left into Thistle Drive, and the second right into Wessex Close. Turn immediately left onto the unsurfaced track into the car park.

WHEN: Winter and spring to see waders.

In summer to see fringed water-lilies, grass-wrack pondweed and dragonflies.

Autumn to see redshanks, snipes and sandpipers.
