PETERBOROUGH Milton Golf Club will be swarming with policemen next weekend . . . but members with a guilty conscience need not fear - they'll all be off-duty.
In fact many of those joining the party on Saturday (September 6) have long since retired from the force. But, one thing's for sure, they'll certainly have their wits about them when it all kicks off.
And kicking off will be a special match to mark one of the greatest sporting achievements by a team of local bobbies.
Two teams of 10 will be descending on the Castor club for a big reunion that will pitch some of Cambridgeshire Constabulary's finest ever golfers from yesteryear against the current county police team.
Twenty years ago Cambridgeshire won the British Police Championships and the team that stunned the golfing world on Tuesday September 13 at Purdis Heath Golf Club in Ipswich are out to prove it was no fluke.
From an original entry of 32 forces, Cambridgeshire progressed to the four-way final along with Gwent, Northumbria and Thames Valley following wins against Bedfordshire (3-2) at Thorpe Wood and Norfolk (3.5-1.5) and Lincolnshire (3-2) at Milton.
Cambridgeshire were very much the minnows but they pulled off a remarkable victory, first beating Northumbria 3-2 and then Thames Valley by the same scoreline in a thrilling decider.
Dave Reed, who was a member of the Cambridgeshire team, wrote at the time in the Police Review magazine: "When Bob Bacon holed the winning putt I was kissing him before the ball reached the bottom of the cup - something I was later persuaded, after a few drinks, to re-enact in the bar for the benefit of the camera.
"The scenes that followed were reminiscent of our school days - sheer excitement, exhilaration and perhaps even disbelief.
"For most, nay all, of us it was surely the most thrilling sporting moment we have ever experienced, and will leave us all with a host of happy memories."
The successful line-up was (handicaps in brackets): Ian Yarham (4) and Neil Strachan (7), John Harlock (8) and John MacCallum (8), Dick Cannell (9) and Rod Cairns (11), Dave Reed (14) and Ian Fawcett (14), and Brian Harland (14) and Bob Bacon (14).
When asked why he was getting the team together again, Reed (67) said: "We are all fit and healthy and want to commemorate the achievement before we start dropping off the edge."
Iain Allan, current captain of the Cambridgeshire Police team, is playiing his cards close to his chest and is leaving his team selection as late as possible.
