COMPUTER whizzkid Martha Cattell proved she knows her fonts from her files when she competed in a global hi-tech challenge.
For the 15-year-old Sawtry Community College schoolgirl, who lives in nearby Holme, has won third place in the competition set by computer giant Microsoft.

She was whisked off to the island paradise of Hawaii on a glamorous five-day all expense-paid trip after becoming the United Kingdom Champion for Microsoft Word earlier in the year.

More than 56,000 students from 47 countries around the globe took part in the multiple rounds of local, national and regional competitions, but Martha was one of just 44 pupils who were selected to travel to Hawaii.

But it wasn't all sun tans and relaxing for Martha (15), as she was also on the trip to take part in the August IT World Championships in a bid to become the World Champion for Microsoft Word.

But modest Martha, who finished third in Hawaii, is not disappointed about not returning home with the coveted crown and is just happy to have taken part in the experience.

The teenager, who scored a remarkable 1,000 marks out of 1,000 in the UK rounds of the competition, said: "It's mainly a skills-based assessment where you answer questions and do tests.

"You have to use the programme and it gets you to do various tasks like renaming files and changing fonts and more expert tasks."

Martha took part in the first round of the competition in an IT classroom at the Sawtry school with the rest of her classmates. Having got all of the answers correct, Martha was selected as part of the one per cent in country who could take part in the national finals in Chertsey, Surrey.

She then became the national champion, after once again getting full marks, where she won through to the World Championships in Hawaii, a trip she completed with mum Rachel and dad Robin.

Martha added: "I was really pleased to get full marks and then I did it again at the nationals, it was amazing. It was a really good experience, the best I have ever had.

"It has made me more confident and I have met people from different countries. I'm really not sure what I want to do in the future, but this should help me get into jobs."

This year's competitions runs between October and May 2009, with the World Championship held during the summer of 2009 in Toronto, Canada.

Any pupil aged 13 or over can participate by taking a Microsoft Office certification exam at a Certiport Testing Centre.
