The '40s-themed weekend saw people arrive in their droves as an estimated 3,000 visitors packed the special event held on Saturday and Sunday at Nene Valley Railway, in Wansford.

Visitors got into the swing of things by dressing up in army uniforms and the crowds were wowed by the sight and sound of a re-enactment by The 39-45 Society.

People arriving by train along the valley railway to the village were treated to musical performances, while the cafe boasted record sales by selling out of rabbit pie and spam.

Delighted organisers were only left trying to work out how to top this year's festivities, which included a much anticipated Battle of Britain flypast.

Event co-ordinator Murray Brown said a Battle of Britain reenactment had involved the bombing of a Second World War boat on the River Nene by a real Lancaster bomber as it flew over the scene.

He added: "It just shows how society has changed over the last 50 to 60 years with the fashions. All in all it was a nice weekend, but we're going to try and beat it next year."

Mr Brown was particularly delighted to see a lot of children at the event, which he believes is down to the success of school visits into the railway to experience what it was like to be evacuated during the war.

He added: "We had plenty of children there, which was nice to see."
