Peterborough City Council officer Kirsty Martin is to receive a coveted honour from environmental campaigner and television personality Professor David Bellamy.
The larger-than-life botanist is to hand over a "Green Hero" award to community engagement officer, Kirsty, in recognition of an education pack she devised for primary schools to help pupils learn about recycling, composting and the impact of waste on the planet.

She said: "I'm thrilled the resource pack has earned this recognition.

"It is essential younger people understand how our everyday lives influence the environment and our quality of life. Youngsters are also great ambassadors for promoting environmental messages to others.

"Other local authorities are keen to follow Peterborough's lead and we are now developing a more advanced resource box that links to the citizenship programme in secondary schools."

The pack, which took more than a year to research and develop, provides CD's and material for more than 40 ready-made activities across 12 subject areas, ranging from art and design to science.

Aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils, it includes "spot the difference" illustrations, information on the history of refuse disposal, and hints on using recycled materials in art and music projects.

It also encourages pupils to take part in practical activities like planting flowers and is now used by 58 schools across the city.

Cllr Graham Murphy, who has just given up the environment portfolio in the city council cabinet for a new post, said: "This award enhances Peterborough's status as an environment city and its reputation as a leader in environmental best practice.

"The resource pack lessons are reaching over 4,000 children, who also benefit from educational visits to the city council's materials recycling facility."

The Green Hero awards are run by The Green Organisation, a not-for-profit group which works to promote best practice in the environmental field.

The awards ceremony takes place on Monday at the Tower of London.
