A peek into the lives of some of the great and the good in Peterborough, and the music, films and books that have captured their imaginations. This week we talk to Stuart Orme, who manages the front of house team at Peterborough's museum, making sure all the visitors are thoroughly
entertained.
Stuart can regularly be seen taking people on tours of the city or spooking them on one of the museum's ghost walks.
Is there a film star/pop star/rock star/artist/writer you admire? And why...
I have to say I'm not a big fan of celebrity culture. In terms of people I admire there are various figures from history or people who have really changed the world. Recently on the news I've been really impressed all over again by Nelson Mandela – he still speaks as a voice of authority and for peace even though he's 90.
Is there a TV programme you couldn't live without?
I'm a big Doctor Who fan – love what they've done with the new series and how they've updated it from what I remember with the original series when I was a kid. Also, I have to get a daily news fix, so usually try not to miss Channel 4 news, unless I'm at work.
Do you remember the first record you bought – what was it, and where did you buy it?
The first record I was bought (by my parents) was probably something really embarrassing like Disney's greatest hits! I think the first one I bought with my own money was probably Queen's Greatest Hits album, bought off a record stall on Derby market.
Tell us about a recent discovery in music, film, art etc...something you've seen or heard recently that you would recommend...
I know it got panned by many people, but I enjoyed the new Indiana Jones film recently as it kind of took me back to my childhood.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new Batman film, given the rave reviews it's had, and going to see the new exhibition on Hadrian at the British Museum. Of course, the best exhibition at the moment is our Crime and Punishment exhibition at the museum.
Tell us about any guilty pleasures lurking in your CD or film collections – something you know is a bit naff but you can't help yourself.
I've got a bit of collection of the old Hammer Horror films, which are great for sitting down and watching with a beer late at night. Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, some attractive ladies and some very dodgy scripts, what could be better?
Favourite film...and why
I'm a big film fan, so loads, Casablanca, the original Star Wars films, Lord of the Rings, Zulu, and many more . . . impossible to choose.
Favourite album...and why
If I had to pick one probably Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, simply because of Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
Favourite book...and why
I tend to mix fact and fiction at any one time, in terms of fiction – historical, detective, thrillers, all sorts. If I had to pick a favourite then it would probably be Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings. It's a great comfort book, on the rare occasions I'm off ill it's a great to immerse myself in.
Is there a song or individual piece of music you always come back to?
Not really, I like all sorts of music. At the moment if I'm having a stressful day I'm bizarrely listening to medieval chant, as it seems to be quite relaxing.
