My favourite things: Michael Houlihan - 26/09/08
Published Date:

We take a peek into the lives of some of the great and the good associated with our fair city, and find out about the music, films and books that have captured their imaginations: Michael Houlihan, who co-owns the new Mama Liz's restaurant and music venue in Stamford. He is also in the band Dead Rabbits.
Whether they are Proust-reading arts aficionados or action movie and lads' mag obsessives, we will discover the truth behind their cultural preferences as they reveal a few of their favourite things.
This week we talk to Michael Houlihan, owner (with Liz, Dan and Pat) of Mama Liz's Bar/Restaurant and Voodoo Lounge Music Club, in Stamford. He is also a member of The Dead Rabbits and founder committee member of the Randall Rootz music festival.
Is there a film star/pop star/rock star/artist/writer you admire? And why...
Not one particular person, but I admire bands who stay together and produce a substantial body of work, which is increasingly difficult and rare. I also admire irreverence, those who don't pander to guidelines, especially.
Is there a TV programme you couldn't live without?
I have an unhealthy need to check Sky Sports News whenever possible, in case I miss something. I'd be interested to see a study into the addictive qualities of Channel 405.
Do you remember the first record you bought – what was it, and where did you buy it?
Yeah, it was in Savin's Music Store, in Limerick, Ireland, and I bought Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA. My uncle was with me and tried to sway me away from it, as I only had a tenner in the whole world, and the tape was eight quid, but I stuck to my guns and made the purchase. I was 12.
Tell us about a recent discovery in music, film, etc...something you've seen or heard recently that you would recommend..
Since opening Mama Liz's in Stamford, I've been inundated with material from musical talent in this region, and I've been astounded with how good a lot of it is. So I'd have to say I would recommend getting out there and checking out what's on our doorstep, you won't be disappointed
Tell us about any guilty pleasures lurking in your CD or film collections – something you know is a bit naff but you can't help yourself.
I can honestly say my music collection is a naff free zone, but that's just my take on it. Others may see it and feel it lacks a Celine Dion box set.
Favourite film...and why
Trainspotting probably, it just seemed to catch the mid-'90s mood, and what a soundtrack. More recently, No Country For Old Men made an impression.
Favourite album...and why
Sorry, no can do, could do a favourite 10 maybe, but not in any order of preference.
Favourite book...and why
Maybe, Post Office, by Charles Bukowski.
