My favourite things: Jack Benzie

A peek into the lives of some of the great and the good in Peterborough, and the music, films and books that have captured their imaginations, this week it's Jack Benzie, Lead singer of A Girl Called .
Is there a film star/pop star/rockstar/artist/writer you admire? And why...
Loads! I've got a bit of a soft spot for that lovely fellow Kurt Donald Cobain out of Nirvana. I reckon his work is rather hypnotising and brilliant. But I probably admire this bloke called Justin K Broadrick the most. You may never have heard of him, but he's an icon in my life. GodFlesh, Jesu, Napalm Death, Final . . . the man's a genius.
Is there a TV programme you couldn't live without?
Nah, not really. I would never put that much emphasis on the importance of a single TV show. I kind of like Green Wing though. And Gareth Marenghi's Darkplace. But I still reckon I could continue living a pretty normal life without these shows.
Tell us about a recent discovery in music, film, etc..something you've seen or heard recently that you would recommend...
Music wise, if you're into your electronic and indie stuff, check out Whitey, Popular Damage and Elle Milano. As for film, just have a look on youtube! There's loads on there . . . people jumping into jeans, bouncing ping pong balls into beer cups, throwing drinks cans into bins, beatboxing while playing the flute, anything you want. And if it's not there, put it there for someone else to discover!
Tell us about any guilty pleasures lurking in your CD or film collections – something you know is a bit naff but you can't help yourself.
My CD collection is pretty much entirely made up of Erasure, Village People and Wham! Enough said.
Favourite film... and why?
A Clockwork Orange, because it is simply the most brilliant piece of art, literature, film, storytelling and cinematography that I have ever come across. It's just genius. It's political, entertaining, raw and powerful. Fight Club doesn't even come close, and that's saying something.
Favourite album... and why?
I've never given this any real thought before, but it's probably between Doolittle by The Pixies, In Utero by Nirvana or Disintegration by The Cure. Reason? They're all records I've listened to for years now and I've never got tired of any of them. Plus most importantly they all have moments, even if they last for just a second, that leave me breathless.
Favourite book...and why?
It's a recent discovery, but it would have to be Beyond Good And Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche. The man is a bit mental, and some of his ideas are pretty crazy, but a lot of what he says makes real sense, and it's definitely made me question stuff that I thought I'd figured out ages ago. I love a bit of controversy, too. Nietzsche to me is like a 19th century punk. I like that.
Is there a song or individual piece of music you always come back to?
She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult. I think my dad played it to me or something when I was just a nipper, and it's never really left my side since.
What are you reading at the moment?
The Years Midnight by Alex Benzie. We've always had this book lying round the house for obvious reasons, and I just thought I might give it ago.
