What with nappies, bottles, nursery, school, homework and playtime, is it possible do the busy and exhausting job of a parent while also thinking of the environment?
Tips on being green:

  • 1) Try to avoid using products such as lotions, wipes and shampoo on your baby's skin in the first year. Experts suggest plain warm water and organic olive oil and occasionally a gentle soap instead to avoid worries over man-made chemicals in babycare products.

  • 2) Buy eco-friendly clothes made of bamboo, hemp or organic cotton – even better use hand-me-down clothing if possible.

  • 3) Make use of hand-me-down toys, or have fun and spend an afternoon making your own. Play-dough is very easy to make at home.

  • 4) Use eco-friendly cleaning products in your home.

  • 5) Eat fresh, local food during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. Farmers' markets are a great place to get fresh food on a budget.

  • 6) Prepare your own baby food using fresh ingredients – all you need is a handheld blender to puree the food. Cook ahead and freeze your favourite recipes in ice-cube trays for quick, ready-made meals when time is limited.
