Peterborough stores are urging shoppers to ditch their plastic bags and join them in a campaign to go green this Saturday.
Dozens of shops across the city have pledged their support for the Get a Green Grip Campaign by holding a plastic bag free day when customers will be offered reusable bags instead of plastic.

It is organised by Queensgate Shopping Centre with supp
ort from Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), which has already given out 5,000 natural cotton reusable bags.

The John Lewis store and Marks and Spencer, which has two stores in the city, are just two of many retailers taking part in the bag free day.

The two city centre Waterstone's stores will also take part by reducing the price of their bag for life for the day.

Centre director at Queensgate Roger Hutchings said: "We are already working hard to reduce our impact on the environment and strongly support any initiative that aims to both raise awareness and enlighten people about how they can do their bit. The Get a Green Grip event is set to be a fantastic day and with the support of many of our retailers.

"Hopefully by demonstrating that there is an alternative to plastic carrier bags, we can encourage them to stop using them altogether."
