GREEN-aware Peterborough was yesterday (Tuesday) chosen as one of just six cities to pioneer an innovative project to do away with waste.
Under the Government's Zero Waste Project, thousands of people in their homes and workplaces will pledge their support to recycle as much rubbish as possible.

The naming of Peterborough by Environment Minister Jane Kennedy as one of the chosen six cities to pilot the project will enhance the city's credentials to be named as the UK's environment capital.

The project is being run by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), the environmental charity aiming to create a sustainable Peterborough, and will focus on Cathedral Square and the three streets leading from it, Bridge Street, Cowgate and Long Causeway.

It will also include the Queensgate shopping centre, meaning the scheme will encompass more than 200 retailers and offices, including the town hall and council offices.

Initiatives which could be launched in the city over the next few months include:
  • Turning all businesses in the city centre, including Peterborough City Council, into paperless offices.

  • Installing recycling bins in the city centre as part of plans to redevelop the area.

  • Reducing the number of plastic coffee cups used in offices and cafés by replacing them with china ones.

  • Recycling all the used coffee beans from coffee shops across the city and using them as compost in the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral.

  • Review what each retailer in the city is doing to reduce waste in Peterborough, and reward an eco-champion.

  • Ensure all Christmas decorations are not thrown away, but are given to local arts and crafts groups and schools for re-use.

  • Introduce a present wrapping service in Queensgate using old newspapers.

The project in Peterborough will kick off with a partner meeting later this month.

Chief executive of PECT Hugh Cripps said: "This project will see innovative new methods of waste reduction piloted in Peterborough's city centre. Peterborough will be an exemplar of good environmental practice on all waste." Continues on next page

Am I supposed to applaud the fact that Peterborough is the 'Green capital'?
Sorry, it is childish rubbish, I want no part of it. Being the capital of multi culture is enough sacrifice for me.

The paperless office will only come when someone designs the paperless toilet.

Whilst I am a penny pinching old sod, I really cannot see this one catching on.

Trees are a renewable resource, time isn't. If it helps you in your work then print it out. Bit of a laugh to see the ET talking about a paperless anything !

How much landfill space do we create per year extracting minerals, roadstone, etc etc - Does it need filling in to reclaim the land ?

Is the total lifecycle energy lower for disposable plastic cups or for china cups with a hot water wash ? Does that change if you burn the plastic cups to recover the energy, or recycle them to reclaim the plastic ?

A paperless Peterborough City Council, latte from MacDonalds in a china cup, the smell of columbian coffee beans wafting across the cathedral gardens, Christmas pressies wrapped in last weeks ET and City centre recycling bins full of Maccy D's food waste and dog ends - now this I have to see!!!
