Under the Government's Zero Waste Project, thousands of people in their homes and workplaces will pledge their support to recycle as much rubbish as possible.
The naming of Peterborough by Environment Minister Jane Kennedy as one of the chosen six cities to pilot the project will enhance the city's credentials to be named as the UK's environment capital.
The project is being run by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), the environmental charity aiming to create a sustainable Peterborough, and will focus on Cathedral Square and the three streets leading from it, Bridge Street, Cowgate and Long Causeway.
It will also include the Queensgate shopping centre, meaning the scheme will encompass more than 200 retailers and offices, including the town hall and council offices.

Initiatives which could be launched in the city over the next few months include:
- Turning all businesses in the city centre, including Peterborough City Council, into paperless offices.
- Installing recycling bins in the city centre as part of plans to redevelop the area.
- Reducing the number of plastic coffee cups used in offices and cafés by replacing them with china ones.
- Recycling all the used coffee beans from coffee shops across the city and using them as compost in the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral.
- Review what each retailer in the city is doing to reduce waste in Peterborough, and reward an eco-champion.
- Ensure all Christmas decorations are not thrown away, but are given to local arts and crafts groups and schools for re-use.
- Introduce a present wrapping service in Queensgate using old newspapers.
The project in Peterborough will kick off with a partner meeting later this month.
Chief executive of PECT Hugh Cripps said: "This project will see innovative new methods of waste reduction piloted in Peterborough's city centre. Peterborough will be an exemplar of good environmental practice on all waste."
