PETERBOROUGH has missed out on an environmental award – because the city's population isn't big enough.
The Sustainable Cities Index, conducted by the charity Forum for the Future, only includes the top 20 populated cities in Great Britain, of which Peterborough is not one.
However,
Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) believ
es that this won't affect the city's bid to become the UK's Environment Capital.
Instead, the bid is set to be officially launched next week, on November 19 as planned, and PECT is asking the charity if it can be involved in next year's index.
Chief executive of PECT Hugh Cripps said: "Peterborough can certainly prove itself among these bigger cities.
"The index looks at a number of areas which I feel Peterborough would score very highly in, such as household recycling, air quality, green business per capita and green space.
"There are also some areas which would prove a challenge for Peterborough, such as local population life expectancy. "However, it is these weaker areas which are really driving our work to create the UK's Environment Capital – to address these issues and improve the health and quality of life of local people."
PECT has also announced that it has won a Green Apple Awards, for its eco-educational resource at
