PETERBOROUGH can now carry the green message across the city after its new environmentally-friendly bag was launched.
The campaign, run by Peterborough Environmental City Trust (PECT), saw thousands of the cotton bags given out in Cathedral Square, yesterday lunchtime.

Shoppers got their hand on the stylish bags with the slogan "get a grip", as the city centre aims to make plastic bags a thing of the past.

Chief Executive of PECT Hugh Cripps, Hereward FM's Abby Surgeon and Mayor of Peterborough Marion Todd were all on hand to help launch the initiative

Mrs Todd said: "I am always amazed at how many plastic bags people use.

"If you go to the landfill site, it's a heaving mass of discarded carrier bags. This is a great idea to have one bag".

Children in Cathedral Square had great fun customising their new bags with buttons and ribbons on offer, and the mayor believes it is children who will drive the initiative forward.

She added: "They are so environmentally aware, and they ensure their parents also get the message."

Are these bags available for those that weren't lucky enough to be in Cathedral Square yesterday?

PECT should take up position in Serpentine Green over a weekend.
