A CAMPAIGN to highlight the dangers to the environment of leaking and damaged oil tanks has begun.
The Environment Agency is appealing to residents with fuel oil tanks to ensure they are well maintained and secure.

The six-week advice and publicity campaign covers seven counties, including Cambridgeshire.

"Oil is one of the most common causes of water pollution," said Environment Agency manger Richard Bowen.

"Even the smallest oil leak can have a massive impact on the surrounding wildlife, including birds, fish and plants.

The agency is recommending that oil tanks are positioned more than 10 metres away from any stream or river, or 50 metres from a borehole, well or spring and outside areas prone to flooding.
