Peterborough City Council elections take place on Thursday, May 1 2008. Politics Reporter Jonny Muir will speak to all 70 candidates and ask them what they stand for and why they deserve your vote.
stanground central WARD: Irene Walsh (Conservative)HAVING lived in Canada and Greece, Cllr Irene Walsh, of Lawson Avenue, moved to Peterborough in 2004, and has held a Stanground Central seat since 2006.
She said: "I know Stangr
ound well enough to see how it could shape up in the future. It will be a place where people of all ages are offered and take opportunities to get involved with community activities.
"The playing fields will be fully utilised by people of all ages keeping fit, and the Fletton Youth Centre will be thriving.
"Elderly people will be able to live in peace and security. To make this picture a reality your continuing support will be welcome.
"One thing that Stanground's future does not contain is anything resembling the Magna Park development.
"It could bring jobs, but at too high a cost in terms of traffic gridlock, damage to the environment and reduction in property values. Gazeley should look elsewhere."
stanground central WARD: John Knowles (Labour)JOHN Knowles, of Holdich Street, West Town, has lived
in Peterborough for more than 40 years.
He said: "I can give Stanground a strong voice on the council, and depriving the Tories of overall control should lead to more democracy in the present cabinet system. Voters
will get better value for money.
"I have more than 16 years experience running my own successful business, starting from scratch. I have experience in commerce, industry and the unions.
"In 2002, £88,000 of our money was used by the Tories to construct a bowling green. They did it wrong. They tried again and did it wrong. Now they are going to spend £30,000 of our money to put it right, but
six years later and it's still unused.
"Too many schools have been closed leading to pressure on Stanground
College, which is affecting children's futures. This is
Tory ineptitude. Let's get rid of them."
stanground central WARD: Chris York (Independent)CHRIS York, of Brodsworth Road, Stanground, is afounding member of the Environmental Action Group, which is campaigning against the Magna Park scheme.
He said: "I am not a member of any political party and want to make sure that all residents are treated equally and fairly by the authorities.
"One of the most important things in Stanground is the warehouse development. I can not understand why the Conservative candidate not only threw away her right to vote on this issue but was unable to persuade her party to put a stop to this
development.
"I am not a single issue candidate. Education needs improving, while the traffic lights at the junction of Coneygree Road and South Street are in need of synchronisation.
"An additional crossing is urgently required in South Street and I have started to work with residents so that we can bring this to fruition."
