NEXT week's ballot will provide a litmus test of the success of two incumbent city councillors who are seeking re-election.
NEXT week's ballot will provide a litmus test of the success of two incumbent city councillors who are seeking re-election.

Cllr Gul Nawaz and Cllr Irene Walsh are defending their Ravensthorpe and Stanground Central seats respectively.

The batt
le is likely to be tightest in Stanground Central, with last year's two candidates split by just 104 votes.

Distribution giant Gazeley's proposal to build seven warehouses and an inland port called Magna Park on fields west of Park Farm has turned into a major election issue – even though the development area is in the neighbouring Stanground East ward.

Cllr Walsh has opposed the plan, while the Environmental Action Group – founded by Independent challenger Chris York – is
spearheading opposition to the multi-million pound scheme.

At last year's election, runner-up Ray Palmer, a former Labour leader, polled 1,001 votes, and this year's Labour candidate John Knowles will be hoping to capitalise on party support in the ward.

Meanwhile, in Ravensthorpe, there will be a three-way battle between Cllr Nawaz, Amjad Iqbal (Labour) and Roger Hughes
(Independent).
