POLITICS in Peterborough is becoming a family affair.
A husband, wife and son trio can now look forward to serving simultaneously on the Conservative benches.

Charles Day took one of the Walton seats, while his son, David (25), also took a Paston seat, where his mother, Sue, is already a councillor.

Cllr Sue Day said: "It runs in the family, David's great-great-grandad, George Green was the first one and then my father, George Simmons, represented Stanground Central for eight years.

"And who knows, we could have a few more on the way."

Cllr David Day added: "I only got into politics last year when mum got her seat.

"It is time for the people in Paston to tell us what they want and not us as councillors telling them what needs to be done."

Samantha Smith was also elected as Conservative for the West ward. Cllr Smith and Cllr Matthew Dalton, who also represents the West, are now the latest couple to join the Conservative ranks.

Cllr Smith said: "There has been a lot of negative criticism about myself and Matthew being engaged and working together (as councillors), but we believe that it can only be a good thing.

"We will complement each other and share our strengths and weaknesses to make the city a better place."

There is also a mother and son partnership in the Fletton ward, with Cllr Matthew Lee's mum, Frances Benton, becoming the latest Conservative councillor for the ward.

However, Penelope Fower, mother of Werrington South councillor Darren Fower failed in her bid to get the Liberal Democrat seat in the Bretton North ward.

The election also saw Werrington South councillor Paula Thacker's partner Ray Dobbs, become the new representative for Eye and Thorney Ward.

Councillors John and Judy Fox also remain a husband and wife team after he retained his Independent seat for the Werrington North ward.
