Meet the candidates standing in Ravensthorpe ward:
Roger Hughes (Independent)
ROGER Hughes, of Mountbatten Way, Westwood, also stood as an Independent candidate in Ravensthorpe in 2007.

He said: "I believe that party politics is nothing to do with local politics, and I think it i
s right that the person who represents the area is somebody who actually lives there.

"If elected, I would represent the Ravensthorpe area, not a party line. I do not believe party politics should come into it.

"I would represent the area in the best interests of the people who live there.

"I have an issue with fortnightly rubbish collections because it means that smelly bin bags are left out on the street. I would like to see a return to weekly
collections of rubbish.

"I would also lobby for incineration because in all honesty, there is a lot of rubbish that can not be recycled. Incineration is therefore the best solution."

Amjad Iqbal (Labour)
AMJAD Iqbal, of Angus Court, West Town, stood as a
Conservative candidate in the 2004 election, coming sixth out of seven candidates in the Bretton North ward.

He said: "If elected, my priorities are to ensure that people have successfully used their vote for change in Ravensthorpe.

"The electors are natural Labour supporters who favour progressive politics, and they deserve a competent and honest councillor.
"Many are outraged at the closure of schools and how the council is being run in a shoddy, short-term way.

"I am appalled that the Tories have sat on funds for a new primary school, tried to sell off allotment land that is not surplus, contemplated inappropriate building development at Hampton Court car park and have failed to support local community groups.

"I have good community links and I am committed to winning this ward back for Labour."

Gul Nawaz (Conservative)
GUL Nawaz, of Midland Road, West Town, has been a Ravensthorpe councillor since 2002 and sits on the council's community development scrutiny panel.

He said: "Having spent 20 years at Redring Electric and five years at Peterborough District Hospital, I now work full-time for the people of Ravensthorpe, Westwood and West Town.

"My colleague, Harry Newton, and I are always pounding the streets sorting out problems in the neighbourhood.

"I am a big supporter of the community leadership fund and recently some of the money has been spent on West Town Community Association, stitch and chat group, SmartWater and Happy Days Pre-school group.

"Don't be fooled on polling day. In this election the real fight is for you, the best services for our area and for the best person to represent you in the council chamber.

"Don't break up the hardworking team that is Gul Nawaz and Harry Newton."
