Peterborough City Council elections take place on Thursday, May 1 2008. Politics Reporter Jonny Muir will speak to all 70 candidates and ask them what they stand for and why they deserve your vote.
David Seaton (Conservative)POSH fan David Seaton, of Horseshoe Way, Hampton Vale, works for the Royal Bank of Scotland in London.
He said: "My first action will be to examine Hampton and decide what is good and what could be better. I think it is a great area to live in, but nothing is exempt from improvement.
"I am a believer in the power of voluntary effort and will be looking to help the many groups operating in our area, such as the Scouts, Hampton Neighbourhood Association and Botolph Green Festival Committee.
"I am very much in favour of bringing the plans for a community centre to fruition, incorporating a church, doctors' surgery, a library and meeting rooms.
"I will also continue to support imaginative initiatives like the community leadership fund, which has boosted the Hampton Scouts hut fund and the Festival on the Green."
Mary Rainey (Labour)FORMER city councillor and mayor Mary Rainey, of Oundle Road, is a member of Peterborough Race Equality Council's executive and is chairwoman of Peterborough Women's Centre.
She said: "I am determined to see more facilities for residents in Orton with Hampton, and ask for their support. I will be available to all my constituents, as well as being a strong voice for local concerns in the town hall.
"I will build on past achievements as a parish councillor in Bretton, a city councillor for Bretton and Ravensthorpe, and as an Orton parish councillor.
"I will hold regular surgeries and will build a strong relationship with my constituents as well as knocking on doors throughout the year to find out local views and to promote effective local action to resolve local problems.
"I look forward to using my experience of working with the community and with local residents."
Karen Peet (Liberal)KAREN Peet, of Somerby Garth, Welland, said: "First, it must be said what a crazy ward boundary we have locally. The Orton area should be in an Orton ward, while Hampton deserves its own separate
identity.
"Honesty in local politics is paramount. It shames us all to have local politicians recently convicted of fraud and vote rigging, with even more coming before the courts soon.
"Liberal councillors recently accused the Tory dominated city council of cronyism – misuse of power/awarding favours/the old boys network – when it awarded the Freedom of the City to four politicians with current or past associations with the party.
"By electing a Liberal councillor, local residents will be assured of accountability and honesty.
"Liberals believe Peterborough has been ill-served by political dogfights and one-party domination. Surely, local councillors should be representing their residents on the council first, not their political party?"
Saima Husain (Green)MARRIED with two children, Saima Husain, of Sebrights Way, Bretton, is one of nine Green candidates hoping to be the city's first councillor from that party.
She has a degree in psychology, but is now studying to be a nutritionist - combining interests in health and well being with cooking.
She said: "If elected, I would like to see the city council do more to promote healthy eating, not just in schools but also among adults.
"I would support farmers' markets and other initiatives that encourage people to choose healthy and locally grown food.
"I am standing as a Green Party candidate because the policies of the party most closely reflect my personal opinions.
"We only have one world so we only have one chance. This is why we should each cast our one vote for the Green Party."
