Peterborough City Council elections take place on Thursday, May 1 2008. Politics Reporter Jonny Muir will speak to all 70 candidates and ask them what they stand for and why they deserve your vote.
Last month, Cllr Ridgway announced that he would not be seeking re-election – ending 41 unbroken years on the council.
Traditionally a Conservative area, Samantha Smith, who is engaged to incumbent West ward councillor Matthew Dalton, will be the
favourite to win the seat.
However, standing in her way will be ex-councillor Bob Burke, who, at 85, is seeking a return to city politics as an Independent.
Mr Burke, a freeman of the city, lost his Werrington South seat last May, temporarily bringing the curtain down on a 35-year political career.
Meanwhile, there will also be competition from Ashley Baxter (Green), Muhammad Ikram (Liberal Democrat) and Mohammed Sabir (Labour).
All five candidates have expressed opposition to plans to build in excess of 150 homes on the Grange allotments.
In
Bretton North, deputy mayor and Conservative Cllr Pat Nash is defending the seat she won in 2004.
She is being opposed by Liberal Democrat Penny Fower, mother of Werrington South Cllr Darren Fower, and Labour candidate Colin Martin.
