Peterborough City Council elections take place on Thursday, May 1 2008. Politics Reporter Jonny Muir will speak to all 70 candidates and ask them what they stand for and why they deserve your vote.
CENTRAL WARD: Shaukat Ali (Conservative)SHAUKAT Ali, of Harris Street, Millfield, has lived in Peterborough for 30 years and is self-employed.
He said: "The Central ward is a diversified area, catering for many nationalities. I
passionately believe in improving our area and taking implemented changes further.
"I acknowledge the commendable work that the Conservative councillors have tirelessly completed over the last four years, but there is still more to be achieved.
"This can only be achieved with your continuous support in order to improve matters such as road and footpath repairs, graffiti, fly-tipping, housing and education.
"I am hoping you will wholehearte
dly support me in this election to continue to work with us to achieve our goals.
"And as a Conservative, I believe that people are best placed to decide how to spend their own money, so we are determined to take as little from them in council tax as possible."
CENTRAL WARD: Nazim Khan (Labour)NAZIM Khan previously served as Central ward councillor between 1996 and 2002.
Mr Khan, of Lincoln Road, is the chairman of Gladstone Connect and is the manager of a local pre-school.
He said: "My key priority has always been education and I will continue to campaign for better opportunities for our young people in the future. It is important that children in Central ward get an education they deserve.
"I also want to ensure that Central ward benefits from the North Westgate development. It would not be right for people to walk out of a regenerated shopping area into one the country's most deprived wards. I will campaign to make sure that Central ward benefits from that regeneration.
"Other day-to-day things I would look to tackle are resurfacing roads and footpaths, solving traffic problems and preventing environmental issues, such as litter and flytipping."
CENTRAL WARD: Mohammed Younis (Lib Dem)MOHAMMED Younis, of Clarence Road, has been working voluntarily in Central ward for a decade.
He has been at the forefront of Neighbourhood Watch and Network schemes, earning him an Evening Telegraph Best Neighbour award.
He said: "I feel many residents and several areas in the ward are ignored. If elected, I promise to ensure that each and every resident is able to raise their concerns and worries with me.
"I will keep in regular contact with all residents and keep them informed of any developments happening around the ward.
"Central ward does have problems and areas where improvements are needed, and I will do my absolute best to ensure that all problems that are brought to my attention are highlighted and resolved as soon as possible.
"If residents want a representative that is fair, hard-working, dedicated, and not afraid to speak out on important issues, then vote for me."
CENTRAL WARD: Di Newman (Green)DI Newman, of Elizabeth Court, Millfield, said: "If elected, I would encourage the appropriate implementation of legislation in respect of immigration, refugees and multiple occupancy homes, while I would look to address drug, alcohol and homelessness issues, as well as landlords whose properties fall into disrepair.
"Our city has much to be proud of, and as part of that I am calling for the creation of a thriving market quarter, where traders flourish alongside multinational superstores – instead of being swallowed up by them. "Meanwhile, the Old Still, Brewery Tap and Great Northern Hotel, and many other places of character should thrive in the city's 'new build", and not be culled.
"As chairwoman of the local ME society and a committee member on other health-related organisations, I want a dedicated 'eco-neuro-centre' to address the environmental impact of chemicals and additives in food on our health."
